BACH’S PASSION ACCORDING TO SAINT JOHN
GOOD FRIDAYS 2013 and 2016
Sidmouth Occasional Choir presented, as its inaugural concert on 29th March 2013, Bach’s St John Passion – his great, dramatic and moving setting of John’s Gospel account of the Passion of our Lord (with other, contemplative material).
We greatly enjoyed performing the same work on 29th March 2016, having received a number of pressing requests that we should do so
Our hopes in early 2013 included that that first concert might help to re-establish the tradition each Good Friday, of a performance in Sidmouth Parish Church of good music, appropriate to that particular day in the Church’s calendar. We were able to take a second step in that direction on Good Friday 2014 when we sang a beautiful programme of great Passiontide music, including Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater and movements from Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu Nostri.
We could not put on such a concert in 2015 as various key members of the Choir were away. We hope to put on our fourth concert on Good Friday, 14th April, 2017 when we are planning to perform two beautiful settings of “Stabat Mater” and the Passiontide music in Handel’s Messiah.
